10 Great Mythology-Based Movies

Cultural stories and legends have been used for entertainment long before cinema took over. However, the 10 greatest mythology-based movies often have the most epic and long-lasting societal effects.
Troy

It’s still debated today whether the Trojan War really happened, but some believe that aspects of it were real. The Trojan Horse, for instance, as well as Hector and Achilles, are all great story elements, but historians are often certain that they were never real.
Clash of the Titans

Many fans still hold onto the memory of the original movie from the 1981 movie, as nostalgia is to blame for much of this. However, the remastered 2010 film was interesting despite eschewing much of the material from the earlier version.
Hercules

It’s up in the air as to which version of this legend people enjoy since there have been movies and TV shows made from the legend of Heracles. Even Dwayne Johnson managed to get in on this tale in a 2014 version.
King Arthur

Again, this movie has been done and redone over time. There are earlier versions that were made popular decades ago, and there’s even a version with actors Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law. There’s even a version with Clive Owen and Mads Mikkelsen that’s a little more historical in nature.
Excalibur

Many people love to hear the legend of King Arthur, a tale of gallantry and chivalry that isn’t quite as popular anymore. But the sword that helped to make Arthur the king is still of great import, as is the magician he supposedly had at his side, Merlin.
300

Considering that it is based on an actual battle, 300 is probably one of the most accurate entries on this list. Of course, the movie exaggerates the event heavily since numerous facts are ignored for the sake of cinema, much to the delight of the viewers.
Mortal

This is one of the lesser-known movies dealing with Norse mythology, especially considering that Nat Wolff was an odd casting choice. But it was an interesting film.
Thor

Even though Norse mythology often depicts Thor with red hair and a much bulkier build, Chris Hemsworth nailed the comic book version of this character. While the movie swings far and wide from Norse mythology at times, it’s still entertaining.
47 Ronin

How many people know that much about this Japanese legend? The 47 Ronin is based on a real story, but much like 300, the movie exaggerates quite a bit.
Immortals

The Greeks were known for their pantheon and the many stories that resulted from their beliefs in the gods. This story, in particular, is made greater by the addition of Henry Cavill, though many failed to find it as relevant as a few other movies.
