Looking Back at The Pioneers of Daytime Talk Shows

Looking back at the pioneers of daytime talk shows makes it evident that some of us watched because there was nothing else on, and some watched because they were genuinely interesting. Some shows were a little ridiculous, some were capable of being serious, but the general idea is that they gave us something to think about. Today, the idea of the talk show has changed a little, but the overall feel is roughly the same.
Phil Donahue

It’s respectful to start by saying a fond farewell to one of the most well-known men to hold the mic and ask the interesting questions. This was a man that helped to start the whole idea of a talk show, and even had Johnny Carson on his show at one time.
Oprah

There have been a few remarks and ideas about Oprah over the years that have been less than flattering. She’s done a lot of good for others as the story goes, but when choosing what to believe it’s best to make up your own mind and not listen to the media so much. That’s kind of ironic.
Jerry Springer

Despite how he started out, the fact is that The Jerry Springer Show became known for the sensationalism and the fighting that went on constantly. While it might have been scripted and set up to be as ridiculous as possible, it was still entertaining. Plus, it would eventually give rise to the Steve Wilkos Show.
Sally Jesse Raphael

One thing that many of these shows had in common, and still do, is that they draw praise and criticism in equal measures for their content. While Sally went on to have a successful show, much of her content was occasionally subjected to public ridicule, despite the fact that the same people talking trash continued to watch the show. It’s a laughable bit of hypocrisy, but it’s a part of how talk shows work.
Ricki Lake

Remember the movie “Hairspray”? Well, Tracy Turnblad up and found herself on her own show as Ricki Lake became the youngest talk show host to take on her own spot. You could say that people responded positively to her show since she went on to become well-known among her fans and those who’d only heard mention of her name.
Dr. Phil

Whether you like him or not, Dr. Phil did come up with a great show since those who tend to come on his show often end up making fools of themselves. Well, those who act in an entitled manner tend to do so, anyway. Plus, Dr. Phil is usually pretty quick to remind anyone who thinks they can take over his show that he’s in charge.
